How does Kindermusik meet the needs of the child with special needs?

Kindermusik works especially well for children with special needs. There are several reasons for this:
  •
Because Kindermusik activities are developmentally appropriate, children with special needs can participate, benefit, and contribute in way that enrich the total class experience. The benefits of Kindermusik to a child with special needs are limitless because the goal is new discovery, adventure, and self-fulfillment. These children respond beautifully in this environment as they experience a celebration of possibilities, not perfection.

  •  Kindermusik classes also offer the special needs child social interaction that he or she may not received elsewhere. This helps the special needs child form a true community with other children and parents.

  •  With small class size, and parents or caregivers present and participating, each child gets the individual attention he/she needs. Family participation in class and at home is a consistent focus in, which is vitally important in working with special needs children.

  •  Kindermusik is process-oriented, with no predetermined expectations required in a given amount of time. It is experientially based. Each child takes form the environment what it is he/she needs in order to learn.

  •  There's no need to change any of the curricula to include special needs children in classes. However, some instruments or activities may need certain modifications to address the specific challenges individuals face.

  •  Kindermusik features many instruments, which are suitable for children with special needs, such as the Village Baby Bells (can fit any size, just attach to wrists or ankles)' the Early Childhood Rhythm Sticks are extra wide for easy grip, as are the One-Bell Jingles. The Lollipop Drum was originally designed for music therapy applications and because of its resonance; it works especially well for allowing children to “feel” the vibration. Instruments can also be modified to fit the needs of specific challenges.

Children with special needs-whether physical, developmental or emotional is a very natural extension of the Kindermusik philosophy.

Other than musical development, Kindermusik has immeasurable benefits to areas such as spatial awareness, fine and gross motor coordination, and speech development.

88 Keys offers their education and experience with special needs children to stimulate and treat children with developmental disabilities as a form of therapy.
